The Oyo State government has declared Tuesday, 16th June, 2026, a work-free day to commemorate and celebrate the new Islamic calendar year, Hijrah 1448AH.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the state Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, stating that the government recognises the importance of the Hijrah in the lives of Muslim faithful, urging all residents to use the occasion to pray for peace, unity, and prosperity of both the state and and the entire country.

“The Hijrah marks the migration of the Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622AD, and is considered a significant event in Islamic history.

“As a gesture of respect and solidarity with the Muslim community, we have declared tomorrow, Tuesday, 16th June, 2026, a work-free day in the state,” Oyelade said.

The commissioner further called on everyone to use the opportunity to reflect on the teachings of the Hijrah, pray for the well-being of Oyo state and Nigeria, stressing the need to come together in the spirit of solidarity and brotherhood.

“The Hijrah is a time for reflection, prayer, and community spirit. Let us come together on this day to pray for peace, unity, and prosperity in our state and our nation,” Oyelade added.
