The Rivers state House of Assembly has commenced impeachment proceedings against the governor, Siminalayi Fubara.
The lawmakers, led by the speaker,
Martins Amaewhule, at the plenary on Thursday, accused governor Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Oduh, of gross misconduct.
Leader of the assembly, Major Jack, read the gross misconduct charges, signed by 26 members of the House, as the speaker stated that the notice will be served to the governor in the next seven days.
The day’s proceedings bear the imprimatur of renewed hostilities between Fubara and his predecessor and minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

While describing the governor as a threat to democracy, the speaker, warned that lawmakers are ready to resign, if Governor Fubara is not removed from office.
Amaewhule insisted that the problem in Rivers State is between the governor and the constitution itself, and not with the FCT Minister.
Addressing the Assembly in a fiery speech, the Speaker said it would be better for lawmakers to step down than allow Fubara to defraud the people of Rivers State.
Recall that a horde of the Rivers assembly lawmakers led by the speaker, on December 5, 2025, announced their defection from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress.
Days later, Fubara also formalised his own switch from the PDP to the APC.
However, the sabre-rattling and thinly veiled remarks between Wike and Fubara, which culminated in the declaration of emergency rule in the state in March 2025, have persisted, as the majority of the lawmakers have stayed loyal to Wike.
