Ib North By-election: Tribunal Upholds PDP’s Victory, Dismisses SDP’s Petition Against ‘DoN’

The election petition Tribunal sitting in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Wednesday Upheld the victory of the People’s Democratic party’s candidate, Folajimi Oyekunle in the August 16, 2025 by-election in Ibadan North Federal Constituency.

The Tribunal also dismissed the petition brought before it by the Social Democratic Party, against Oyekunle’s victory.

The SDP, had prayed that the Tribunal nulify the election, faulting the election for non-compliance with the Electoral Act 2022 and called for its cancellation and conduct of fresh or supplementary election in some affected polling units.

In his defence, Counsel to Oyekunle and the PDP, Barr. Tunji Ogunrinde, SAN, raised objection to the competence of the petition and prayed the tribunal to dismiss the petition for petitioner’s failure to list the candidate as a party to the petition.

Delivering its judgment, the Tribunal headed by Justice A.M Yakubu, dismissed the petition, for the failure petitioner to prove the fact and grounds of the petition.

It also dismissed the petition on the ground that the evidence given by the only witness of the petitioner was unreliable, contradictory and inadmissible.

The petition, was consequently dismissed for lacking in merit and the sum of N2 million was awarded in favour of the PDP and its candidate, Oyekunle.
